The group is the first from Blockberry Creative, which started their “girl of the month” project with member Heejin’s predebut solo in October 2016. The group has twelve girls, with each one getting a solo before the group officially debuted in August 20, 2018. The purpose of doing this is to showcase the girls’ talent and introduce them to fans early. Each girl has not only their specific month, but also animal, color, and location. Some members also have an assigned fruit.

The girls also are in subunits. Heejin, Hyunjin, Haseul and Vivi form Loona 1/3. Kim Lip, Jinsoul and Choerry form Odd Eye Circle. Yves, Chuu, Gowon and Olivia Hye form Loona yyxy. Yeojin is the only member not officially in a subunit.

The official fandom name is Orbit, which was announced July 9, 2018.
